In its original form as a daily discipline, architect Jim Biber’s recently launched, The Architect & Designer Birthday Book yielded a year’s worth of Instagram postings. Now, as a fleshed out tome, this gathering of 366 creatives reads as a hypothetical guest list for an episode of This Is Your Aesthetic Life if Jim were the subject. Photographers, sculptors, painters, an odd musician and museum curator, as well as a few couturiers also make the cut, each one assigned their own page and a bio that’s filtered through lots of Jim’s anecdotal segues and amusing musings. Jim’s sizable design resumé includes scores of commercial and residential buildings so it’s no surprise that his influences and inspirations are diverse but they’re also refreshingly unpredictable. In his preface, Jim imagines the book being read on shuffle rather than from cover to cover but I’m taking a linear approach by focusing on a page a day, as if the A&DBB were a cool, secular version of an advent calendar. Designed by Michael Beirut/Pentagram, it’s sturdily bound by Princeton Architectural Press.

I’m reluctant to promote my own books because I’m more at ease celebrating other people’s work but one of my latest books - Inside Outside; A Sourcebook of Inspired Garden Rooms published by Timber Press - IS all about other people’s designs and horticultural passions. It focuses on the symbiosis between landscaping and interior design (walls/hedges; hallways/garden paths; ceilings/tree canopies) in 25 projects in Paris, Finland, New York, San Fran and beyond. It’s inspirational with some “how to” thrown in for good measure! If I say so myself, its lush green tonic of hedges, hostas and hydrangeas perks up these gray, months when nature is taking a nap.
